So, yesterday as Joel and I were getting dressed for church Joel asks, "Are you going to wear your white shoes?...today is the last day!" Then he says to himself...I guess I should wear my light colored suit one more time too! So then I started getting a little stressed about how much use he really gets out of this really nice and to me really expensive suit that I bought him last year. Should I have just gotten him a Navy colored suit that he can wear all year that would've been more practical? He does look good in his suit however. Then I was thinking, Brooklyn doesn't have any fall shoes. Is it really that bad for her to get some more use out of white sandals with cork/straw heel? So this got me thinking I need to do a poll and get your opinions about what is still Taboo about the Labor Day white wearing ordeal! I found on wikipedia this statement, "Popular fashion etiquette dictates that white should not be worn after Labor Day.[3] Originally it was white shoes that were taboo— white or "winter white" clothing was acceptable.[4] The custom is fading: "Fashion magazines are jumping on this growing trend, calling people who 'dare' to wear white after Labor Day innovative, creative, and bold. Slowly but surely, white is beginning to break free from its box, and is becoming acceptable to wear whenever one pleases. In the world of western attire, it is similarly tradition to wear a straw cowboy hat until Labor Day. After Labor Day, the felt hat is worn until Memorial Day."[5]
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK! I AM DYING TO KNOW! I also really want the thick white pants from express for winter..is that bad? Sometimes I might be too daring and then don't ever wear them again...HELP!!!

I say wear white whenever you want. If you are young and look cute in it, nobody cares. On the other hand, you will never catch me in a pair of white pants again. "broad side of the barn" comes to mind.
I agree...wear whatever you want, just no socks with sandals! That will always be a "no, no" on my list!
I say...you live in the south and what may be ok (white after labor day) in NYC or the west coast is still not acceptable in the south. I look at a lot of things that are considered "fashionable" and wouldn't be caught dead in it.
sorry, no fashion advice here ... i am definitely NOT the one to ask, but give me a call this week sometime and I will share with you what I have learned abt. coupons.
I know, you are thinking, what can Rosalind the most unfassionable of all the family, have to say about this. Well, I say, do what you want! Who cares what others think! You're mom is right, you are young and cute...you can get away with a lot! I say once those white pants are on sale...buy them and wear them a lot!
Love Ya!
i think i remember reading in Glamour that the "no white after labor day" rule doesn't even exit anymore. lol. so go for it.
I'd like to clarify my previous statement...I'm a huge NO to white shoes, but I see nothing wrong with thick white pants. The thick in the decription tells me that those are obviously not pants meant for the months between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
I'd like to think of myself as a fashion expert (considering that IS my profession: a fashion stylist :)) and i have to say that i ALWAYS wear white after labor day...I think fashion is all about creating your own rules. After all, how else do fashion trends get started?
I like to watch "What not to wear" on TLC. In the opening segment they have some street signs with fashion statements on them. One sign does say, "white shoes permitted after Labor Day".
There you go. Who knows better than Stacey and Clinton??
That is what I was gonna say. I saw an episode where Satcey London and Clinton Kelly said that is an old school rule. Done by people in the eighties who used to get their colors done! It is not applicable anymore~and their word is scripture to me!
Well, I've never been one to give fashion advice or seek it out either because I wear what I want and just hope it looks good. I wouldn't really worry about it as I'm pretty certain you have great taste and you and your little family always look good!
I am definitely going with Stacie and Kelley on this one and saying it is certainly okay to wear white after labor day. I would suggest going with a fall and winter style though and not summer. As long as you do that, wear all the white you want. I would love a nice long white jacket actually!
